A Call To MAP's Members, Families & Friends

The Maine Association of Police has endorsed Democratic candidate John Richardson in his run for the Blaine House. Many of MAP's members know and remember John as a trusted and ardent supporter of public safety, both as an attorney, and as a legislator. John's work and dedication has made it possible for those who serve to have a voice in their jobs and working conditions. Event Helps Maine Trooper and His Family

For those of you who don't know, in the spring of 2009, Maine State Trooper Tom Gonneville's wife Lisa was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.  Tom has been a Trooper for about 13 years.  He has been out of work for quite some time to take care of Lisa and their four children (ages 2,4,6 & 18).  Please join your fellow Troopers and Police Officers in supporting their family by attending the event below and generously contributing to the silent auction. Please purchase tickets BEFORE March 12th to help in planning for space needs!

Portrait Honors Portland Officer

Portland Police Sergeant and artist Bruce Coffin is announcing the production of a limited edition print in memory of Portland Police Sergeant Rick Betters. Sgt. Betters died unexpectedly in his home in January of this year, and leaves behind a wife and two young daughters’ ages 12 and 2.  Limited to 120 prints of an original oil painting, Bruce Coffin will be donating half the proceeds from the sale of the prints to the Betters family at their annual awards banquet in January.

The prints will be based upon the photo shown below. Each signed and numbered print measures 13”X13” (unframed) and once all prints are sold there will be no other chance to purchase copies. Bruce Coffin has set up the Betters Memorial Portrait Account at the Portland Police Department Credit Union in order to take direct payments for these prints. The price per print is $60.00 plus tax bringing the total cost to $63.00. For those MAP Units in the Greater Portland area you can arrange to pick up your prints from Bruce Coffin at PPD or at the MAP June Full Board Meeting. For MAP departments that are outside the area, you can add $10.00 for shipping and Bruce will get the print to you. Orders and payments can be sent to the Portland Police Department Federal Credit Union, 109 Middle Street, Portland, Maine 04101. The account at the Credit Union is the Betters Memorial Portrait Account #1091-62.

If you are not familiar with Bruce Coffin’s work, it is outstanding. You can visit his website at:

http://coffincreations.com/index.html

Please consider purchasing a print for your office, home or squad room. Once you see the photo in which the print will be based on, you will understand the importance of remembering our brothers and sisters who have gone on before us. Your help will make sure that Rick Betters family receives some support, and that we have a tangible reminder of the honor involved with being in this profession. Stay Safe and thanks for your help.

A CALL TO HELP RECOGNIZE THE SACRIFICES OF OUR NATIONS VETERANS:

THE MAINE MILITARY MUSEUM & LEARNING CENTER

The old engineering building located in Mill Creek Park in the City of South Portland is now the home of military artifacts and uniforms honoring Maine veterans from all wars and of peacetime service. The centerpiece will be the largest display of Vietnam POW items ever seen in the United States, comprised of actual POW uniforms and artifacts made in prison which were smuggled out at release, such as a small Christian Cross, a bamboo rosary, the Chinese lock & chain used to hold a prisoner in his cage, secret writing on toilet paper and cigarette wrappers, art work done after Homecoming and much, much more.

I currently have two major displays at the Smithsonian Museum, (American Museum of History and the Air & Space Museum) in Washington,  DC., one at the Richard M. Nixon Library in California, one at Naval Air Station Lakehurst, NJ, with a major upcoming exhibit on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, as well as items at the Wright-Paterson AFB Museum.

MAP's members are invited to participate in this great effort to honor our veterans. If you  have uniforms, patches, insignia, medals, war souvenirs, books, paperwork, truly anything military, which are currently gathering dust in attics and closets, please consider donating them to the museum. Here in this museum your artifacts will be displayed with your name and thus your service will be forever honored.

The items being requested are not limited to Maine veterans only, but to anyone who served this nation, making this a special place for future generations to learn your story and that of your families, not Hollywood’s version.

Monetary donations are also gratefully accepted and are 501 (3)(c) tax deductible. Donations should be made out to:

MAINE MILITARY MUSEUM AND LEARNING CENTER

Sincerely,

Lee Humiston  - Vietnam War P.O.W. Archivist

“I was that which others did not want to be. I went where others feared to go, and did what others failed to do. I asked nothing from those who gave nothing, and reluctantly accepted the fact of eternal loneliness should I fall. I have seen the face of terror and felt the stinging cold of fear. I have loved, cried, suffered, and hoped, but most of all, I have lived times others would say were “best forgotten”. At least some day I will be able to say that I was proud of what I was - A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER!” (Source; Unknown Author)
